Since the rise of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), creators have left their Web2 identities and carved their way into the Web3 world. Also, it's not just for tech and art creators who are shifting towards Web3.

Nike CryptoKicks Sneaker

For instance, sneaker and apparel giant Nike made a significant move towards the metaverse when it acquired RTFKT Studios in December 2021. Today, the partnership finally bore results as RTFKT revealed Nike's first Ethereum NFT sneakers, CryptoKicks.

What Are CryptoKicks?

Designed for use in metaverse worlds, The RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis CryptoKicks are digital Dunk Low digital sneakers. Initially, RTFKT revealed them via a Twitter teaser video, describing CryptoKicks as the "future of Sneakers".

Thanks to Skin Vial tech, users can customize the look of the digital sneakers using the "Skin Vials" collectable, which can be swapped to enable varying styles. The Skin Vial collectible consists of exclusive skins designed by a community of artists and collaborators of RTFKT.

To get you started, with EVO X, RTFKT is launching a collection of eight different Clone X skins for CryptoKicks. Over time, the skins will evolve your CryptoKicks, earning you "powers" and "drip upgrades" as you navigate through the RTFKT "Ecosystem".

The Nike x RTFKT CryptoKicks Drop

For opening the Nike CryptoKicks, users need to use the RTFKT's MNLTH Ethereum NFTs, which were free airdrops to the holders of CloneX and other RTFKT NFTs.

Following today's reveal, a series of puzzles were posted, which the collectors needed to solve before RTFKT's website launch. Solving the puzzles lets holders open mysterious NFT vaults. For example, as revealed by some holders on social media, the MNLTH vault contains a pair of CryptoKicks, a second MNLTH vault, and a single skin vial.

According to the RTFKT Discord server, the firm plans to launch another quest series for unlocking the MNLTH 2 vaults later this year. In addition, every pair of CryptoKicks will feature an "evolution path", enabling them to evolve somehow.

Already, Nike Dunk Genesis CryptoKicks holders are trying to resell the Ethereum-based digital sneakers on secondary markets. On OpenSea, the sneakers are going at a floor price of 2.35 ETH at the time of writing.

Final Say

In December 2019, Nike got a patent for CryptoKicks as a blockchain-based system where digital assets could be paired with a physical product. However, the latest iteration of CryptoKicks is far different in approach. As RTFKT puts it, the new venture is "the revival of Nike CryptoKicks by RTFKT, starting with Evolving skins."

With rumors already circulating about new releases in the product line as early as next month, CryptoKicks is expected to be the first of many launched by Nike and RTFKT. However, with RTFKT and Nike keeping things pretty ominous, stay tuned to NiftyHype for more drops soon.
