With a whopping 3.86 million monthly global searches, the NFT-based play-to-earn game Axie Infinity has topped the list of most-searched NFTs on Google. In recent months, the popularity of NFTs has also skyrocketed, with the number of global searches averaging 5.1 million per month. The exposure from celebrities and media has led to an increase in the number of searches by about five times compared to late 2021.

Axie Infinity is an online game similar to Pokemon, where the game characters, called "Axies", are digitized and stored as NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. It is a trading and turn-based battle game, where players can collect, breed, raise, battle and trade Axie NFTs. In 2021, the play-to-earn model of the game made it hugely popular, and it currently has more than 2.8 million unique addresses owning 11.1 million Axies. The Axie Infinity collection can be considered the most popular NFT collection with an all-time value of $4.1 billion and 1.9 million traders.

With an average of 533,000 monthly global searches, The Sandbox is the second most searched NFT collection on Google. The Sandbox is a metaverse where players can interact with the game's virtual world using NFTs. Due to interest from popular brands and celebrities, it has quickly grown in popularity. Recently the hip-hop sensation Snoop Dogg released a collection of 10,000 playable characters on the platform, and K-pop's SM Entertainment announced creating a play-to-earn ecosystem in the metaverse. The Sandbox collection has an all-time value of $369.15 million with around 37,518 traders.

The next on the list is NBA Top Shot, with an average search of 477,000 every month. Essentially it is a platform where users can buy, sell and collect top NBA moments. It's somewhat similar to the concept of trading cards, the difference being that the NBA Top Shot NFTs are digital moments existing on the blockchain.

Sorare, the fantasy football game, comes forth on the list with 417,000 global searches. Decentraland follows it in fifth place with 201,000 global searches.

In 2021, the NFT space crossed the $40 billion mark, with thousands of projects popping up now and then. Due to the growing importance of NFTs across several industries, educational institutions like Ankara University have also started offering NFT focussed courses.
